July, 2016 — GREENWOOD, BC (BG)

Known for its mild and pleasant climate, there are four distinct seasons in Greenwood, British Columbia. Summers are dry and hot and humidity is low, making the summer heat very pleasant. Winter typically lasts from mid-November through February, with December seeing the most significant snowfall. December also tends to have the coldest temperatures.

The region's relatively dry climate is believed to have helped preserve its many turn of the century wooden structures.

Long term climate trends for Greenwood, published by the Meteorological Service of Canada, include the following data points:

Mean Annual Precipitation: 20.1 inches (51 centimeters)
Mean Summer Precipitation: 7.1 in. (18 cm.)
Mean Winter Precipitation: 13.0 in. (33 cm.)
Mean Precipitation in Driest Month: 1.0 in. (2.54 cm.)
Mean Precipitation in Wettest Month: 3.1 in. (7.8 cm.)
Mean Annual Snowfall: 90.4 in. (229.6 cm.)
Number of Months with Snow: 3.1/year
Mean Annual Temperature: 42.3 deg. Fahrenheit (5.7 Celsius)
Mean Temperature in Coldest Month: 19.6 F (-6.8 C.)
Mean Temperature in Warmest Month: 63.0 F (17.2 C.)
Wettest Month: January
Driest Month: September
Number of Frost-free Days: 163

While statistical numbers are helpful, judging the climate of a place is perhaps easier by comparison. The following chart compares several of Greenwood's key climate measurements against three other southern British Columbia cities:

coastal Vancouver (179 km.)
semi-arid Penticton (146 km.)
Nelson, in the Kootenay Mountains (179 km.)

(The first chart is metric, the second imperial.)
